General election

Sir, —With the recent launch of the Christian Heritage Party, which appears to have splintered off from National, it seems likely that the New Zealand electorate will have a choice of six political parties at our General Election next year; maybe even seven if a Green Party enters the hustings as well. No doubt some of the minor parties have merit in some of their respective policies, but it is quite unrealistic to suppose that any of them will achieve political power under our present non-proportional system. The discerning voter, therefore, will be faced with just two choices, National or Labour. As National has declared itself in support of A.N.Z.U.S. and nuclear weaponry in this country, I would like to believe that responsible New Zealanders will support our present independent nuclear-free status. Labour deserves to be re-elected, unless it succumbs to Australian pressure and buys into the unholy frigate deal!—Yours, etc., R. L. PLUCK. July 13, 1989.
