Australia to fund climate stations
Australia will fund a network of stations to monitor climate change in the Pacific, its Prime Minister, Mr Hawke, announced yesterday. Speaking at the annual South Pacific Forum, he said that about $8 million would be spent during the next five years. For some South Pacific nations, “greenhouse effect” climatic changes could be a matter of life or death. The Forum host, Kiribati, is only two metres above sea-level at its highest point. “You don’t need much of a rise in the ocean level and you’re talking about “goodbye Kiribati’,” said Mr Hawke. The announcement did not say where the climate monitoring stations would be. Mr Hawke said Forum members would be consulted. Local staff would run stations, he said.
