Service ‘marries’ parishes
A service in the form of a wedding was held on Sunday to join two Presbyterian parishes: St George’s, Linwood, and Aranui’s lona. The inauguration service was held at St George’s Presbyterian Church on the corner of Linwood Avenue and Gloucester Street with the Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery, the Rev. Gladys Burgess, leading the service. Congregations of the two parishes made vows to each other and commemorative plaques were exchanged like rings by the two session clerks. A cake was cut at the “reception” afterwards. The moment when the couple are declared man and wife was marked by two candles lighting one bigger one, then being blown out, symbolising the two parishes becoming one. At the reception representatives from other churches were welcomed.
