Earthquake risk decreases—D.S.I.R.
PA Wellington The risk of a large earthquake in the Bay of Plenty has apparently decreased after a quiet week-end with no significant shocks since early Thursday, an official said yesterday. Dr Warwick Smith, superintendent of the seismological observatotory at the D.S.I.R. said seismologists who went to Whakatane with portable recording equipment had returned home. They left three instruments working so that any
further low-level activity could be recorded at close range. Permanent stations of the national seismograph network were adequate to maintain surveillance on the region. The likelihood was that the two earthquakes which jolted Whakatane and the surrounding region on Wednesday, and Thursday were just isolated events, despite their similarity to the foreshocks of the 1987 Edgecumbe earthquake, Dr Smith said;
