University fees
Sir,—While members of Parliament are praising the virtues of higher education they have turned around and proposed an enormous fee increase. Fair enough, I hear you say. But what is going to happen to those of the working class? Are they to be denied the opportunity of such education, simply because, they cannot meet the fees? Besides, students have already/ made sacrifices to gain a recognised qualification, such as forfeiting a sustainable and regular income simply to attend university; working at least 50 hours a week for the equivalent of the dole; not to mention numerous other hurdles (e.g., sub-standard housing). If the Government wants qualified people, it should be prepared to fund them. Those who have attended university or had the desire to should vigorously oppose and fight this proposal for the sake and benefit of all New Zealanders.—Yours, etc., TONY FLANAGAN. July 6, 1989.
