All over Bar The Shouting
NZPA-AAP Melbourne A New Zealander, Davina Waddell, became the second woman to train the winner of the sAustls2,ooo ($198,871) Grand National Steeplechase (5000 m in the last four years at Flemington when Bar The Shouting won the race on Saturday. Waddell has trained the eight-year-old gelding since he was cast off as a two-year-old. “He was given to me just after he had been broken in. The previous connections said he
didn’t have any pace and weren’t prepared to go on with him,” she said. Waddell came to Australia with the New Zealand Derby winner, Isle Of Man, and won the 1982 Rosehill Guineas as an owner-trainer. But now she is concentrating more on jumping horses and has eight in work. The New Zealand jockey, Tim Wheeler, had Bar The Shouting (11-2) travelling handy to the leaders throughout, but wide. “I kept him wide because he jumps better
when he can have a good look at his obstacles,” said Wheeler. After King Dollar started to weaken, Bar The Shouting was left in front. “I took a chance and decided to put the pressure on because I knew he’d stay the distance,” said Wheeler. Bar The Shouting led around the home turn but was challenged strongly by Valiant Gamble (8-1), which was hugging the inside rail. Valiant Gamble looked as though he would win,
but Bar The Shouting fought back strongly to score by a length. Direct Mail (11-2), held on to finish third 15 lengths away, ahead of the topwelght Noble Heritage (13-8 favourite). “He’s only 15.1 hands but is a very tough horse and never gives up,” said Waddell. Despite his victory Waddell said Bar The Shouting would miss the sAustl2s,ooo ($160,256) Hiskens Steeplechase (3600 m at Moonee Valley on July 29 and would instead return to New Zealand.
