Intercession
Sir, —The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Marshall, has very rightly strongly criticised China for recent happenings in that country. There is even talk of sanctions. His reaction was quite
different when approached to intercede on behalf of young Odile Harington, imprisoned in Zimbabwe for “spying on Zimbabwe,” a crime for which the State produced no evidence. He said that “it would be inappropriate to attempt to influence the judicial processes of another State.” Because of the torture and sexual degradation to which she had been subjected by the C. 1.0. before her trial, Odile’s 25year sentence was reduced, on appeal, to 12 years. Reports just received indicate that she is still being tortured at least once a fortnight, and almost certainly being raped as well. Odile is a South African. — Yours, etc., L. R. WILKINSON. June 23, 1989.
