Big hockey victory

PA Sydney New Zealand Universities hammered New England University, 6-0, in a men’s hockey match at Armidale in New South Wales yesterday. A New Zealand junior representative, Shane McLeod, bagged four of the goals, including three from penalty strokes. Dave Wigmore added a field goal and Gavin Strang scored from a penalty corner. In spite of the big scoreline, the touring team took a long time to establish its dominance and led only 1-0 at half-time. The score also reflected some superb goalkeeping by Bryce Simpson for New Zealand Universities, who was under pressure several times but pulled off fine saves. The match was the second of the New Zealand Universities tour, having beaten Queensland University, 6-2, on Sunday. Test matches against Australian Universities will be played in Sydney on Sunday and Saturday week.
