Wright picked to fight election

A former vice-president of the New Zealand Democratic Party, Mr John Alexander Wright, has been selected as the party’s candidate to contest the 1990 General Election in the Rangiora electorate. He was the only nomination for the candidacy at a selection meeting in Rangiora on Monday. Mr Wright was vicepresident of the party for nine; years until 1986, when he decided to take a break from politics. He has been president of the Christchurch North electorate and has served on many other national bodies of the party, including being on the campaign committee in 1981, He was born and educated in Ashburton and served his apprenticeship as a panel-beater in the town. Mr Wright was in the motor trade for several years, rising to manager. He is now a sales representative for a Christchurch firm and lives in Rangiora. Mr Wright, aged 44, is married and has five children. His eldest daughter, Sandra, stood as candidate for the party in Fendalton in 1984 at the age of 18. Mr Wright told the selection meeting he believed that the money supply and credit issues were important to the security and well-being of New Zealand, and for a government to abandon these responsibilities was “tantamount to treason.” "I believe that it is possible to organise the economy of New Zealand to give a fair chance to all without destroying the soul and social fabric of our society, as we are doing,” he said.
