Handholds on hulls lifesavers
PA Wellington After 14 fatal deaths in water this year, the Water Safety Council has urged boatowners to fit handholds to hulls, as well as wear lifejackets. Eleven deaths, the highest figure in eight years, involved small, open, power boats, the executive director, Mr Alan Muir, said. “Because of the popularity of small aluminium boats it is not surprising that we have high numbers of boating deaths in these craft,” he said. “Like all open boats, they must be operated within their limited capabilities on our open coastline. “In particular, once capsized the crew must be able to climb out of the water on to the upturned hull to await rescue in order to preserve body heat and keep death by hypothermia at bay,” Mr Muir said.
“The fitting of handholds on the bottom or transom of such craft would greatly assist this,” he said.
