Helensville losing hope in new city

PA Auckland Helensville residents have almost given up hopes for a planned international city in their neighbourhood, in spite of assurances from the Mayor, Mr Eric Glavish, that plans will be unveiled shortly. The president of the ratepayers’ association, Ms Audrey Ashton, said the announcement had been put off so many times, many in the town no longer believed it.

Plans were to have been released this month but the latest date given by Mr Glavish is “some time in July.” The consortium of overseas and New

Zealand companies backing the proposal was tying up loose ends. The proposal, for a mini-city with a population of about 250,000, was conceived by Americans and financed by Japanese interests, Mr Glavish said. Plans were still going according to schedule so the city should be completed in five years.

Ms Ashton said it looked like having the same fate as other proposals which have failed to eventuate. The town was to have been the site for the Commonwealth Games village, the first legal casino in the country, and even a nuclear power plant, she said.
