PA Wellington From January all New Zealand surveyed ships
will have to carry emergency locator beacons, announced the Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries, yesterday. The ships will have to carry the beacons whether they are on foreign or coastal trading. “This means all fishing and merchant vessels operating in New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone will now have to
be equipped with locator beacons,” Mr Jeffries ■ said. .
“All foreign fishing boats licensed for the zone will also be required to carry , beacons. ” “The move also covers all New . Zealand ships operating anywhere in the world.” He said the success of the beacons in saving lives and time in search and rescue work made the extension a logical move.
