Cracks linked to blast
PA Auckland Cracking is suspected in the C.N.G. cylinder which blew a car apart on Sunday indicating the cylinder may have been defective. What appeared to be fine cracks, had apparently developed before the blast at a Mt Albert service station. They were found, inside the cylinder neck, a senior inspector of explosives and dangerous goods, Mr Kim Comben, said yesterday. The Italian IMZ tank, tested and approved last July, exploded just after filling, flinging metal fragments across the station’s forecourt.
While the Ministry of Transport is responsible for any action on the subject, Mr Comben said if he owned such a cylinder, “I would not be having it filled until this matter is resolved.”
A “significant number” of cars in New Zealand have Italian tanks, he said.
The D.S.I.R. is likely to examine fragments from the cylinder today.
“The situation has to be addressed rather rapidly,” he said.
No problems had been discovered with dispensing equipment at the station.
