Lange rejects cuts claim
By OLIVER RIDDELL in Wellington Claims that teacher trainee numbere are to be cut are inaccurate, says the Minister of Education, Mr Lange, commenting on claims made in Auckland last week-end.
The numbers had not been done, so it was too soon to say how many teacher trainees might or might not be needed. Mr Lange said the claims were made by people who had a vested interest in putting their case to the public before any situation had arisen. The Opposition’s spokesman on education, Dr Lockwood Smith, repeated the claims and described the cuts as a doubeful short-term saving for a long-term cost.
New Zealand needed all the teachers it could get, he said, and reducing numbers suggested . the Government was no longer interested in improving secondary education.
