Australians buy N.Z. broodmares

By

JEFF SCOTT

Three notable standardbred broodmares, and the pacers, Blythbank Del (C 6 Lord Stiven (C2), Made My Day (Cl) and Roydon Whirlwind (juvenile), have been sold to Australian interests.

Shu Fly, the dam of the smart Australian racemares, Jasmarilla, a 1:57.3 time-trialist as a two-year-old filly and later a 1:55.2 winner in North America, and Carome Julie, the winner

of over 20 races, has been sold by the National Bloodstock Corporation to Victorian interests.

Only an 11-year-old, Shu Fly (by Lumber Dream), is also the dam of the minor winner Aussie Salute, and is from the same family as the 1971 New Zealand Cup winner, True Averil.

In foal to Soky’s Atom (1:53.6), Shu Fly’s weanling filly by Butler B. G. (1:53.8) is also included in the package, being con-

signed by the Christchurch agents, P. W. and J. A. Davies. The Davies firm also transacted the sales of two former Kenwood Stud-owned mares, the North American-bred Miss Visa (Armbfo Nesbit—Belle Bret, by Bret Hanover), which has a Smooth Fella weanling filly and is in foal again to Smooth Fella; and Miss Elizabeth (Nevele Holi-day-Goody Good), a mare closely-related to

Jay Bee’s Fella (1:55.6), which is also in foal to Smooth Fella.

Blythbank Del (1:58.5), a rising nine-year-old Armbro Del mare which won six races from 128 starts from George Shand’s Washdyke stable, has been sold by Kevin Townley to clients of Michael Dux’s Queensland team.

Lord Stiven, which showed promise in winning twice from five starts from the Broadfield

trainer, Michael de Filippi, is also headed for Victoria, along with Made My Day, a winner for Russell Kennedy this term.

These sales, along with the unraced Smooth Fella filly, Roydon Whirlwind, from a half-sister by Armbro Hurricane to former N.Z. Broodmare of the Year Roydon Dream, to Western Australian interests, were negotiated by Pyne, Gould Guinness bloodstock representatives.
