AUSTRALIA Hooker takes sharp fall

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed slightly easier yesterday in subdued trade dominated by another sharp fall in Hooker Corporation shares. Hooker shares tumbled 22c to 30 on turnover of 4.1 million after news that the company has received a four month moratorium on debt repayments. Pembroke Securities and Dominguez Barry Samuel Montagu were the main sellers of Hooker shares, while Bain Securities crossed a special package of I.BM shares at 33c a share. The all-ordinaries index closed 1.2 points lower at 1509.4. The all-industrials index fell 10 points to 2463.5, but the all-resources gained 4.6 to 791.9. The gold marker was up 2.1 at 1436.4. National turnover was a moderate 89.6 M shares worth sAustl4o.7oM. Falls led rises 229 to 139. Bond Corporation fell 9c to 101, while Bond Media was steady at 29c after the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal ruled Mr Alan Bond unfit to hold a broadcasting licence. The Bond subsidiary, Bell Resources, was suspended from trade by the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) after the company’s directors did not conform with an ASX request to provide information about the proposed purchase of Bond Corporation’s brewing interests. Elsewhere in the industrial sector, Amcor rose 11c to 429, and BHP gained 4c to 842. Brambles fell 20c to 1340, and News Corporation was down 5c at 1510. Goodman Fielder Wattie gained 2c to 218, while the take-over target, lEL, slipped 4c to 202. The lEL parent, Brierley Investments, fell 1c to 136. Asarco Australia gained 2c to 80 as 10.IM shares were crossed by Hartley Poynton. Brokers said they belived the

shares were destined for John Spalvins’ Adsteam and were the last of lEL’s stake in Asarco. .
