Latimer Heights
Sir, —It is interesting to note the opposition to the Gloucester Street apartment proposal. There has also been local opposition to the proposed Latimer Heights. The Latimer Square environment is unique in the buffer it provides between commercial and residential areas. The inclusion of a 12-storey tower on the residential side will help to destroy the atmosphere provided by the fine residential homes that extend in an arc from St John’s Church around to the Worcester Street intersection. Also, there is a unique inner-city residential environment in that area which provides low-cost accommodation for a large number of people. The impact of a building like this on the local community should be an important concern. Perhaps what is needed in Christchurch is a requirement for a social impact report, funded by the developer, to ensure that any such development is in keeping with the neighbourhood and its people.— Yours, etc., S. A. DUNSTAN June 17, 1989.
