Chinese not allowed on plane

PA Wellington New Zealand’s relations with China deteriorated yesterday with the Government refusing to let Chinese diplomats fly in a New Zealand plane to the South Pacific Forum in Kiribati next month.

The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said at a press conference that passengers in a New Zealand plane to Kiribati were to have included Chinese officials.

“They’re no longer going on a New Zealand aircraft,” Mr Lange said after a Cabinet meeting. The decision was the result of the Government’s concern over strife in China, he said. While China was not a formal agenda item for the Forum, that was not to say it would not be at the forefront of discussion, he said.

Mr Lange said the Cabinet decided an international compact on trade sanctions against China was unlikely. The Government’s position remained that, in joining or initiating a trade boycott, New Zealand would be punishing itself severely.
