Saudis win soccer
NZPA-Reuter Glasgow Scotland’s Brian O’Neill missed two penalties as 10-man Saudi Arabia battled back from 2-0 down at half-time to lift the world under-16 soccer championship yesterday. A Saudi player, AlHamdi, was sent off 6min from the end of normal time and the team then forced the game into extra time before clinching victory 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out. O’Neill, match winner in the semi-final against Portugal, had his weak penalty saved by Al-
Deayea with the score 2-1 and only 18min left. The let-off inspired Saudi Arabia to equalise 4min later through Waleed Al Terair and force extra time. With the score deadlocked at 2-2 the match went into a penalty decider and again O’Neill figured prominently in the drama. With the score 4-4 after five penalties apiece, O’Neill’s effort was again blocked by Al-Deayea, leaving Galem Al-Alwi to capture the trophy by beating Scottish goalkeeper Jim Will.
