In brief
Korean force honoured Kyung Suk Suk, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, will lay a wreath at the Hall of Memories in the National War Memorial in Wellington today. The wreath will honour the memory of 39 New Zealand servicemen who died on active service during the Korean War. Between New Year’s Eve, 1950, and the signing of the Armistice in July, 1953, 3794 New Zealand soldiers saw active service. Of that number, 37 died, 79 were wounded, and one soldier was taken prisoner by the North Koreans. — PA. The The concert date The rock group The The will play at the Christchurch Town Hall auditorium on Thursday, July 27, not this Thursday, as reported in the “What’s On” section of “The Press” last Friday. The The, which has had international success with records such as “Soul Mining,” will also perform at Wellington (July 29) and Auckland (July 31) during its New Zealand visit. Woman abducted A woman in her early 20s was abducted from her central Wellington Aro Valley home early yesterday. The police said a man took her to a house in Miramar and sexually violated her. The woman was with the man for about an hour before the police arrested him. A student, aged 22, has been charged with assault, abduction, and sexual violation in connection with the incident. He will appear in the District Court at Wellington today. — PA. Snow closes passes Heavy snow in Central and West Otago forced the closing of Lindis and Haast pass roads and the Crown Range road during the week-end. Last evening the Lindis Pass road was reopened for vehicles equipped with chains but a senior service officer with the Otago Automobile Association, Mr Alex Lowe, said Haast Pass would probably not reopen until this morning. Haast Pass was blocked by heavy snowfalls and debris carried by small avalanches. — PA.
