Senior officer backs warning
PA Wellington The Police Commissioner’s warning that the public should lower expectations of the police because of staff cuts was not an overstatement, a senior officer said yesterday.
Mr John Jamieson, the Commissioner, said last week the axing of 267 positions would significantly reduce services in most regions. One newspaper reported that the figure of 267 was largely theoretical because most of the positions to be cut were vacant. In real terms there would be no more than 68 fewer officers than were now working. But the police planning and resource management head, Assistant Commissioner Don Gray, said yesterday it was incorrect to try to minimise the situation by referring to actual staff levels rather than authorised levels.
