Bridge crash fatal A North Canterbury man was killed instantly when his car hit a bridge in the Weka Pass on Saturday. He was Sydney Dennis Hirst, aged 70, of Waikari. Mr Hirst was the only occupant of the car, which crashed into Antills Bridge just after midday. Smash kills driver A Hokitika man was killed early on Saturday after he was thrown from his vehicle after it hit a concrete lamp-post near the Kaihinu overbridge, about skm north of Hokitika. He was:Brent John Wejbster, aged 26. The Greymouth police said Mr Webster was the sole occupant of the vehicle which went of control while travelling north. It hit the post nearly 100 m from the overbridge. Van ransacked A Swiss couple who crashed a campervan near Otira during the week-end, returned to find it ransacked. Toiletries and other items were found scattered along the roadside, but nothing appeared to have been stolen, Constable Niall Shepherd said last evening. The hire van left the road at Klondyke Corner about midday on Saturday. It was badly damaged. The tourists suffered superficial injuries. Simulated search A simulated search and rescue exercise near Lake Coleridge failed to find two shooters at the week-end. The “lost” pair walked out to a base camp yesterday after 150 searchers from several organisations had combed the terrain. Two other “injured” shooters were found and carried to an area where a helicopter could have landed. The searchers faced heavy snowfalls on Saturday. Spate of burglaries
Electrical goods were the main items targeted in a spate of burglaries in Opawa at the week-end. Four homes in Grange Street, and one each in Hawford Road, Opawa Road and Eastern Terrace, were broken into. Several thousand dollars of ,equipment was stolen.
