Fraser rides two winners
By
DAVID McCARTHY
Rayleen Fraser, an apprentice, gained her first wins at Riccarton when Dogwood and Face The Music scored back-to-back victories on Saturday. Fraser has ridden twelve winners in all since transferring south last November to Jim Lalor, trainer of Face The Music, from the Central Districts.
Face The Music, second to The Stropper in heavy conditions over the distance at his previous start, his third on this campaign, is something of a chance member of the Lalor stable. He is raced by Doug Landels, of Clinton, who offered Lalor two horses, out of the blue, two years ago. The other, Gay Asset, showed a lot of ability but injury ended her career before the best was seen of her. “We had been recommended to Mr Landels by Maree Lyndon. I hadn’t had much to do with her but she had ridden for my
brother Tom a bit and I’ve often wondered if she got us mixed up. If she did I’m quite happy about it” quipped Lalor who is likely to race Face The Music in the Brabazon at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting next Saturday.
Face The Music also won in Brisbane when trained earlier by Bruce Marsh. He has given another boost to his sire, Musical Phantasy, now standing at Paritai stud at Amberley. The Bishop and the Queensland Derby winner, Hidden Rhythm, have pushed Musical Phantasy into the limelight in recent weeks.
Godsin ran another honest race for second after having to overcome the inside draw with the much improved Red Apollo holding on well for third. The favourite, The Snob, was slow away but did not run on quite as expected though he held fourth well enough.
