Sir Andy shows taient

By

JEFF SCOTT

Ron and Agnes Hudson, of Waikouaiti, are reluctant to sell their promising five-year-old, Sir Andy, and in - just three starts from Derek Jones’s Templeton stable it is not hard to see why. The younger brother of the former smart three-year-old, Liquid Lightning (1:57), took his record to four wins and three placings in 13 career starts when successful in Saturday’s Andrei Winter Cup at Waterlea. This was his second win in only one week’s racing from the Jones stable, having completed his early education under the direction of former Kerrytown trainer, Richard Brosnan. “He has been well looked after and is a perfect racehorse. He’s got good manners and a good turn of foot,” said reinsman Anthony Butt of Sir Andy. Butt was completing a double for the day, having earlier scored a front-running maiden win with Maori El. Sir Andy was driven in behind, settling third last. He stormed home to shade Mayhem, which trailed, by a long neck at the end of the 3200 m journey. Sir Andy re-emerged at last week-end’s Nelson meeting after a year’s layoff, having raced 10 times for Brosnan. He was given time to develop.

“ He wouldn’t take much racing and he needed a long spell, so we put him out for 12 months.” said Mr Hudson. With Brosnan moving north to Pukekohe last November, Mr Hudson had no hesitation in placing Sir Andy with Jones, his other professional trainer. “This is a peculiar game,” said Mr Hudson. "Sheltoe, which we raced, started out with Derek and ended up with Richard. Now it is viceversa with this horse,” he added. Brosnan selected Sir Andy for the Hudsons and the purchase was completed privately. Earlier Brosnan had trained Liquid Lightning, the* first foal from the Out To Win mare, Lurex. Sir Andy is the mare’s second foal. Two of the best winners for Mr Hudson have been Ardleigh, the runner-up in a Rowe Cup when trained by Jones, and Lucrative, 1 the winner of seven races. Mr Hudson raced both of those winners with his father, George. Sir Andy has the potential to be Mr Hudson’s best winner. Along with Honkin Vision and the open-class trotter Aron Del, Sir Andy has done much to rekindle interest in the up-and-down career of their Albatross sire, Honkin Andy, this season.
