Mare’s win reward for consistency

By

The decisive first-day winner, Mascara, which is five months in foal to the Nero stallion Paulsboro (1:54.2), could wind up her current racing with a repeat success in the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second day of the Marlborough Harness Racing Club’s meeting today.

The Honkin Andy mare was rewarded for consistency in a lower grade on Saturday, and with Sir Andy and Friday, two of the principals of Saturday’s C 3 race not engaged today, she looks as good a chance as any of the Starborough Tavern Pace. “She wouldn’t be racing now if it wasn’t for John Hay,” said Mascara’s Ashburton trainer, lan Lochhead, on Saturday.

to bringing her back for another season after she foals,” said Lochhead, a steward of the Ashburton Trotting Club. Saturday’s C2 win capped off birthday celebrations last week-end for Mrs Lochhead, who does virtually all the work with the mare. “Her win today was my best birthday present,” said Mascara’s elated handler and part-owner. Mascara, by Honkin Andy (1:58.8), the sire of Saturday night’s feature Auckland juvenile winner, Honkin Vision, is the fourth foal from the Waitaki Hanover mare. Dawn Tryax. Mr Rennie, now living at Dorie (near Ashburton), earlier bred the good winners, Trendy Tryax (1:56.2, U.S.) and Joe Cool, from Dawn Tryax. Mascara, a little unlucky when second to Harmonise on the final day of the recent Nelson meeting, finished boldly from midfield on Saturday, returning a respectable 3:2 for the mobile 2300 metres in the slushy conditions. Her previous win was from a standing start over 2600 m at Addington in May. The South Island’s leading reinsman, Ricky May, who suffered a sprained thumb when tipped from the sulky in the final event on Saturday, has been cleared to take the drive behind Mascara again today.

The mare had broken down in a tendon for the second time in January and after sending her to Paulsboro, Lochhead was informed of a special treatment for tendons by Hay. "She had been blistered after going in the tendon for Michael de Filippi, and when it went again we thought that would be it,” said Lochhead, who races the five-year-old with his wife Tineka, on lease from de Filippi’s former neighbour, Mike Rennie.

The compound is applied to the tendon twice a day and the only time she is without it is when she is worked.

Hay was given the opportunity to drive the mare in return for his help, but had to forgo the drive because of a clash of interests.

"She is going that well now I wish she wasn’t in foal. But we are giving thoughts Jetbet: 7
