Lange defends Maori funding
PA Wellington The Minister of Education, Mr Lange, yesterday criticised Opposition claims that a Government policy giving schools $75 extra for each Maori child enrolled was apartheid. The acting Opposition spokesman on education, Mr Murray McCully, dubbed the’ scheme on Thursday “grossly offensive” to Maoris, saying funding by race automatically classified them as underprivileged.
But Mr Lange said it was designed to preserve and enhance the Maori language. “If Mr McCully finds that offensive, perhaps he could explain his reasoning to the Maori people.” The Maori language component was. only part of the equity-based allowance that schools would receive. The other was the special needs grant for schools with extra learning problems for so-cio-economic reasons
