Student grant ‘apartheid’

in Wellington Government plans for a $75 grant for each .Maori student enrolled at school have been described as “apartheid” by the Opposition.
Mr Murray McCully (Nat., East Coast Bays) said schools taking part in a trial survey had been told to budget an extra $75 per Maori pupil under the heading “Maori language.” New funding for education should attack underprivilege and not race, he said. Funding by race was grossly offensive because it automatically classified Maoris as - “under-privi-leged.”
The Minister of Education, Mr Lange, said Mr McCully was attacking a grant that already existed and was not a new element of the Government’s drive for equity in education.
It was designed for the retention and enhancement of Maori language and culture, he said, and was a small part of equity funding. The largest part of equity funding was to take care of others with special needs. . p.
