Chinese students
Sir,—Your reply to my letter, on the subject of publishing the names and photographs of demonstrating Chinese people evades the issue. Your willingness to expose the students to official retaliation is not the test of their allegiance to democratic ideals. Your stated assumption that the students had “carefully considered their position” is quite groundless as I have ascertained from speaking to a number of them. Furthermore you did not answer my question which I now repeat. Do you intend to continue publishing their names and thus virtually sign their death warrants? “Prudent anonymity” was advisable from the very outset of the current tragedy. Recognition of this fact would not have detracted from your coverage of events. — Yours, etc., E. MOLLOY. June 20, 1989.
[Publication of names or photographs that would identify students will be subject to the wishes of the students themselves. — Editor.]
