Negative news
Sir,—New Zealand’s biggest problem is its negative attitude. One only has to pick up a copy of “The Press” to see that the news media go out of their way to portray current events in the worst possible light. On June 13 “The Press” headlines read “Change policies or risk chaos.” The B.E.R.L. consulting group was quoted as predicting a 0.5 per cent economic growth and % million unemployed. Yet on June 19 did the N.Z. Institute of Economic Research optimistic forecast of 3 per cent growth and “higher than expected incomes and increasing business confidence” receive the same front page treatment? No, this good positive news was hidden away on page 6. — Yours, etc., P. O’CONNELL. June 19, 1989.
