Award for saving offender

By

TONY WALL

a enristchurch police constable has received a bravery award for rescuing an offender he was chasing. Constable Christopher Hughey was given a certificate of merit by the Royal Humane Society yesterday. Mr Hughey and another policeman were chasing two offenders in the Kaiapoi area on September 1, 1987. The offenders jumped into the Cam River and one of them got into difficulties. Constable Hughey said he had no hesitation rescuing the man. “If I didn’t save him we would have spent all night searching for him,” he said. “Other police do braver things but don’t get the recognition.” Constable Hughey received a “thanks” from the man he saved but was not overwhelmed with gratitude. “He still pleaded not guilty.” A spokesman for the Royal Humane Society, Mr John Wignail, said the incident was brought to its attention by a member of the public. "We recognise acts of valour when life is placed in danger,” he said. Constable Hughey had put himself in danger and the offender would have drowned if it was not for him. Constable Hughey, aged 32, has been a policeman for 14*4 years.
