Anti-foulant banned

New regulations restricting the sale and use of some anti-foulant paints will come into force on July 1. Anti-foulant paints containing high-release organotin compounds were the
target of the regulations, adopted to protect New Zealand’s marine life from damage caused by such compounds, said the Minister for the Environment, Mr Palmer, and the Minister of Fisheries, Mr Moyle.
The controls on sale and use of organotins
would be in place for next summer’s boating season, they said. The paints had been a cause of concern because they affected marine life around marinas and other areas where boats were moored. Damage included shell thickening and sex changes among shellfish.
