Molotov attack on police
PA Nelson A Molotov cocktail was thrown at the Motueka Police Station on Tuesday night, scorching a one metre-high area of paint. The petrol bomb was made using a spirits bottle, which appeared to have been thrown from or near the footpath at the north wall, the police said yesterday. It bounced off the wall, charring the paint, before landing on a concrete driveway, causing a small fire.
Sergeant Jim Burrows, said he would like to hear from people who saw or heard anything in the area, probably early yesterday. He could not think of any specific reason for the attack.
Motueka police in recent months had had continual problems with a number of young criminals in the district who were repeatedly in court facing drug, petty theft and assault charges, he said.
The Molotov incident comes five months after a youth set fire to the former police station next to the present building.
