Morale-boosting win
PA Wellington The New Zealand men’s under 19 softball team yesterday scored a morale boosting 4-3 win in a warm-up match before it begins the defence of its world title this weekend at Prince Edward Island in Canada.
The team had flopped badly in the Pioneer Day tournament last week-end at Salt Lake City in the United
States, finishing sixth when it was favoured to do much better. The coach, Dale Eager, said from Summerside, Prince Edward Island, that yesterday’s win showed the team was in good shape to take on the United States in its first match. New Zealand finished third in its group of six in the 12 team competition and lost, 1-
0, againt the third-placed team in the other group to finish sixth over all. The tournament featured open grade teams from Salt Lake City, Idaho, Nevada and Canada. “The sixth placing was certainly disappointing given the team’s good performances in earlier training matches. But on the positive side, it’s good that we have got this bad patch out of our system.”
