Forbes’ training success continues

PA Hawera The Cambridge horseman, Graham Forbes, continued a profitable first season as a public trainer when Kinastatic won the Hawera Processors 1600, first leg of the Egmont Racing ’ Club’s T.A.B. double at Hawera yesterday.

Forbes came to Hawera with 11 wins to his credit and made it 12 earlier in the day when his two-

year-old Space Indian won the juvenile event in impressive style. Ku-asiatic, which started favourite, settled back off the pace in the heavy going but moved closer to the leaders near the home turn. Under a punishing ride from David Peake, the five-year-old collared Dad’s Gift right on the finish line.

Forbes, who rode 60 winners as a jockey before embarking on a

training career four years ago, prepares Kinastatic for the 20-strong Kinross syndicate. Kinastatic and runnerup Dad’s Gift will likely clash next in the $35,000 Whyte Handicap at Trentham on July 8. The Hawera-trained Maria’s Pal caught betters unawares when she scored at odds of 22 to 1 in the Radio Taranaki Progressive, second leg of the double.

‘ She was having her first start since clearing maiden ranks at Awapuni eight months ago. Rated perfectly by a Waverley apprentice, Damon Smith, Maria’s Pal came along the fence in the heaviest going to nab the pacemaking Tara’s Gold on the finish line. Maria’s Pal is trained by Neil Bradley for former Opunake Racing Club president, John Poole.
