Shipwreck relief totals $11,200

PA Dunedin The Shipwreck Relief Society paid $11,200 in the last financial year to families which suffered loss through boating tragedies. In the society’s annual report, the president, Sir James Barnes, of Dunedin, said the last year had again been characterised by losses of fishing vessels. The society provided prompt financial aid to widows and families in the difficult period from date of loss until an inquest could be held, and all insurance and other benefits could be paid in full, he said. The incidents on which the society paid out were: Deep Sea 2, missing at sea off Hawkes Bay November 28, 1987, $1000; Linda Maria, swamped by wave and sank Foveaux Strait, March 7, 1988, $2800; Lorolei, drowning off Bluff April 4, 1988, $600;

Ali 3, lost off Hen and Chicken Islands, July 8, 1988, $2400; Lolite, drowning Mataikona River mouth, April 22, 1988, $700; Marina May, lost off Greymouth River bar, November 6, 1988, $3200; Te Rau Tau, sank West Coast, 129 km from Greymouth, February 3, 1989, $5OO. Sir James said that although the society was able to transfer a surplus for the year of $10,999 to the accumulated fund, which totalled $123,747, it was clear the fund growth had not kept up with inflation. "We have increased our grants to ensure that dependants are not disadvantaged by this trend,” he said. “We also keep in contact with the trustees of a major estate which is often able to provide more long-term assistance in these cases to the children of men lost at sea.”
