Eighth day for striker
PA Wellington A Porirua man who is demanding marae-based justice was in the eighth day of a hunger strike yesterday. Francis Manewha Shaw, aged 24, unemployed, faces indictable charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and using a weapon to cause grievous bodily harm. They relate to a
shooting incident in Elsdon last September.
Shaw has refused to recognise “pakeha law” and turned down legal representation and bail. He was due to make his ninth appearance in the District Court at Porirua yesterday before Judge Bate.
Several earlier appearances had been disrupted by his supporters, forcing the presiding judge to va-
cate his bench. Shaw’s sister, Miss Jane Shaw, said yesterday her family was extremely worried about Shaw. “He is not looking too well and is definitely looking run-down,” she said. Miss Shaw was also worried that her brother may have the flu. About 50 supporters had turned out at the court yesterday, she said.
