Lincoln teacher wins scholarship to U.S.
BY
CORAL BROADBENT
Alastair Carruthers, aged 24, an English and music teacher from Lincoln High School, is the main winner of the 1989 New Zealand Association for the Teaching of Eng-lish-Independent Newspapers, Ltd, scholarship. The jointly-funded scholarship is awarded to teachers who wish to pursue research that will benefit other English teachers. It encourages its holders to have a newspaper component as part of the research project.
Mr Carruthers will use the scholarship to help
finance a trip to the United States where, along with Ms Pauline Scanlan of Hagley High School, he will attend the Capital Area Writing Project, an international course at the North Carolina State University. Mr Carruthers will present a paper on teaching journalism to junior classes as his contribution to the course. The paper is the result of work done with a fourth form class who studied “The Press” at Lincoln High School.
On his return to New Zealand, Mr Carruthers will compile a resource kit for teachers, on teach-
ing and assessing classroom writing. He will be assisted by Ms Scanlan.
Mr Carruthers said the scholarship was “great.” Too few salaried opportunities were offered to teachers to enable them to help each other.
He was pleased to have been awarded the scholarship and to have been granted paid leave by the Education Department. He saw the contribution of I.N.L. towards the award as demonstrating the newspaper industry’s commitment to teachers and education.
