Telecom delays charges
PA Auckland Size is the reason Auckland will be one of the last centres to be billed for local business telephone calls. Telecom’s sales and marketing director, Mr Jack Lee, said the new equipment for Auckland exchanges would not be ready until at least April
1, 1990. Telecom (Auckland) was spending up to $9OO million upgrading the system for the three years beginning last year. The main costs were replacing phone exchanges with “stored programme controlled exchanges” and installing fibre optic junctions.
“We’re installing some fairly sophisticated equipment. Auckland is bigger so it requires more,” he said. Facsimile and computer equipment were tying up local phone lines for long periods and Telecom would upgrade the system to cope with the increased demand.
