M.P.s caught out
PA Wellington Two Opposition M.P.S were caught out yesterday over the timing of an on-again, off-again select committee hearing. The Maori Affairs spokesman, Mr Winston Peters, and his colleague, Mr Warren Kyd, called a press conference at short notice over the sudden cancelling of a Maori Affairs select committee hearing yesterday afternoon because there whs no quorum. But, apparently at the same time Messrs Peters and Kyd were speaking to reporters, the committee resumed. Reporters
checking later found three Labour M.P.s on the committee listening to submissions, but no Opposition M.P.s present. When he was advised of that Mr Peters went into the committee room and asked the chairman, Dr Bruce Gregory, to explain why the meeting had been reconvened without Opposition M.P.S being told. “I understand neither of you were in your rooms but the message was delivered to your secretaries,” Dr Gregory said. They were, in fact, at their press conference complaining about the meeting not taking place.
