Greater protection for car buyers
A new computer system being bought by the Justice Department will give greater protection to car buyers. The department was buying computer technology for a Motor Vehicles Securities Register, said the Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer. The register would allow buyers to ensure clear title of vehicles before they bought, said Mr Palmer. This should prevent repossession agents turning
up at any hour and removing vehicles because of previous owners’ debts.
It would be essential buyers used the service, because if they made no inquiry and a security was registered on the vehicle, then financiers would be able to have the vehicle repossessed. Mr Palmer said the registry, due to open in April next year, would be able to respond to telephone inquiries and requests for certificates.
