Collective expects big turnout
PA Hamilton The National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges (N.C.1.W.R.) expects a record turnout for its national conference and annual meeting today at Karapiro. About 200 women are likely to attend the four-
day conference. “Numbers have been increasing every year. Increased funding has given us this opportunity,” the national co-ordinator, Ms Roma Balzer, said. “Learning from each other’s experiences in the refuges are discussed at
the conference. A lot of situations are often the same.” Parallel development for refuges will be discussed. Parallel development means whatever is established for a Maori refuge will also be established for a non-Maori
refuge and vice versa. A core group or executive committee will be elected on the third day of the meeting. N.C.I.W.R. acts as a 24hour crisis intervention service for women and children who are victims of domestic violence.
