Kune Kune

Sir, — I wish to query the accuracy of your recent feature article on the kune kune pig. I was born in .Mokau in the 1920 s and am a descendant of the original tangata whenua who lived in proximity to the Mokau River for hundreds of years prior to the coming of the pakeha. The kune kune was very much part of our lives and culture and it was a unique animal, quite distinct from the pigs liberated by Captain Cook and Governor King. A 1987 Press Association report in “The Press” concerning the New Zealand Heritage Park stated that the kune kune had been brought to New Zealand by the first Maori settlers. These pigs were also referred to by early European explorers, viz Ernst Dieffenbach, P. S. Smith, and KerryNicholls. Their pre-European existence was also the subject of an article by Percy Tipene printed in the “New Zealand Journal of Agriculture” (September, 1980). — Yours, etc.,
