Lots of community courses beginning at Lyttelton

Calligraphy, beginners guitar, seafood cooking, and women’s self defence courses are all starting at the Lyttelton Recreation Centre this month.

Both the classical guitar classes and the calligraphy course will be on Saturdays, and the other two classes on Tuesday evenings.

A Well Women’s group, which includes exercise, talks, cooking classes, home renovation ideas, and a communications workshop is on Monday mornings.

On Wednesday • mornings is a craft group, with instruction in patchwork, quilting, embroidery, a clown pyjama case and cottage boxes. Child care is provided for these groups. For more information contact the centre at 15 London Street, Lyttelton, phone LYTT 8403 or 7391.

Lincoln community courses

Following the success of the community courses offered at Lincoln College last year, more courses are being offered this term. These are Standing and Speaking, on Thursday afternoons, The Food You Eat and What’s In It on Thursday evenings and Personal Computer Proficiency on Saturday mornings. Starting soon are Personality Preferences and Life Patterns, on Monday evenings, The Science of Wine Tasting, on Tuesday evenings, Introduction to Marketing for Small Businesses (a two day course), Getting Your Message Across to Consumers, on Thursday evenings, and Access to Information from Libraries, on Thursday evenings.

All courses are a mixture of theory and practice and use the most recent research and teaching materials of the college. Some courses are held at the college, others at the engineering school, Okeover House in Ham, or the A.M.P. building. Arthritis and assertiveness

An assertiveness workshop for people with arthritis will be held this Wednesday, June 14.

This will cover self-es-teem, coping with criticism, and the doctor/ patient relationship. It will

be at 322 Armagh Street from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop is a joint venture of the Arthritis Society and members of International Training in Communication.

Bird Society

Sir Peter Elworthy, th.e chairman of the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust, will give the Lance McCaskill Memorial address this Wednesday, June 14. This will be at the annual general meeting of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society in the Stringleman Room of Canterbury Public Library at 8 p.m.

communication Turning Negatives to Positives is a workshop for Christian women being held on Saturday, June 24.

The speaker is Elva Jackson, who was a counsellor at Hamilton Teachers College for seven years. Elva will advise on dealing with the past, handling criticism, gaining from ongoing burdens and self-image. The workshop, from 1.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. will be at the Reformed Church of Bishopdale, 90 Highsted Road. The cost is $5, payable at 1.15 p.m. For more details phone Frances Watson at 584145. Rosary House seminars Rosary House is offering a few hours to busy business men and women to unwind and reflect on their lives, their motivation and their future this Thursay, June 15.

A personal development and stress management course will be held this week-end at the Mercy Centre in Colombo Street. The Rev. Colin Jamieson will lead this course, which will look at exploring the inner self, personal relationships, self esteem and growth. Again, $3O is suggested.

Op shop buying is one of the areas looked at by Heather Robinson in her wardrobe planning service, which she offers at the reasonable price of $65 for up to two hours, or, if there are two people together, $45 each.

Heather has 80 swatches of fabric to determine which colours best suit you, gives a make-up, figure profile, wardrobe plan, advice on altering, caring for and co-ordinating clothes and a shopping guide. Alcohol and drug volunteers A new group for volunteers in the field of alcohol and drug treatment has been formed in Christchurch. Called the Volunteers Support/Task Group, it meets every second and fourth Monday, from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. at the Alcohol Liquor Advisory Council rooms, 2527 Mandeville Street, Riccarton. A meeting will be held today.
