In brief
Youth festival for 1990 A World Youth Festival in Christchurch would be the biggest single South Island project for 1990, an organiser said yesterday. Mr Alistair Graham, a community adviser with the Christchurch City Council, said the multi-cultural festival would be held in September and be substantially funded by the 1990 Commission. It will run for three weeks and include a combined concert by the National Youth Orchestra and an international drama festival organised by the Theatre Federation. “The festival will begin with a mardi gras and include rock concerts and a talent quest," said Mr Graham. New coupon parks New coupon-only parking areas will be introduced in Worcester Street and Montreal Street, adjacent to the Arts Centre, from today. They are both sides of Worcester Street, between Montreal Street and Rolleston Avenue, and the west side of Montreal Street, between Cashel Street and Gloucester Street. The shortage of parking in the area had worsened with the closing of the public car-park in the Arts Centre, now reserved for long-term tenants, the engineering officer with the Christchurch City Council parking division, Mr Brian Neill, said. The south side of Hereford Street could be converted to coupon parking soon, he said. Three scouts lost Three venturer scouts were spending their second night lost in the Tararua Ranges last night, while 12 rescuers camped out awaiting dawn to resume the search. The three, whom the police have not named, were with a group of about 15 who set out at 10 a.m. on Saturday from Otaki to Waitewaewae Huts, a four-hour tramp. The police were called in about 6 p.m. on Saturday when it became apparent the three were lost. Search and rescue teams could not find the three young men yesterday and the search was called off last evening. More teams and a helicopter would be used today, the police said.—PA.
