Rinaldo puts Holmes back in winner’s circle
Maurice Holmes, known as “The Maestro” during his illustrious driving career which heralded 1666 wins, made a welcome return to the winner’s circle when Rinaldo romped away with the Apex Tyres Pace at Rangiora on Saturday.
Holmes, who retired from race driving at the
compulsory age of 65 nearly 15 years ago, has trained a small team in the ensuing years. Rinaldo, a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Saville Row raced in partnership by Holmes with long-time friend Bernie Wilks, credited the veteran horseman with his first win for two years and three months
on Saturday. His previous winner was Nicolai, also reined to victory by Colin de Filippi, at the Hororata meeting in March, 1987. Rinaldo, having his fifth career start on Saturday, was in the open for the first 1000 m before receiving cover. He kept up a bold run over the closing stages to score convincingly.
