Impala wins
Impala Platinum Holdings, one of the world's major platinum producers, has won a legal battle against a South African tribe which tried to stop the company from mining on its land. The Bafokeng tribe, which owns most of the land mined by Impala in the South African homeland of Bophuthatswana, wanted the company to provide information on its mining production, not normally provided by South African miners. The Bophuthatswana Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the tribe's argument. The dispute over royalties from the platinum-rich land, which comprises 83.9 per cent of Impala’s total mining area, had been simmering for years.
