Further unleaded fuel move
By
OLIVER RIDDELL
in Wellington By January next year all unleaded petrol pumps in New Zealand will have narrow filler nozzles. The Under-Secretary for the Environment, Mr Dunne, said this was a significant step towards the
unleading of all petrol by 1996. Motor vehicle manufacturers had told the Government that the small filler nozzles and the wider availability of unleaded petrol meant they would make more vehicles with smaller diameter filling points, a precaution against wrong-fuelling during the change-over period, Mr
Dunne said. All areas of the vehicle industry could now plan for the introduction of a fully lead-free petrol supply. Vehicle manufacturers had confirmed that two grades of unleaded petrol would be needed — 91 and 95 octane. The oil companies could now plan oh that basis.
