Squash recruit impresses

Lancaster Park’s new, young recruit from Waimate, Jason McLauchlan, made an immediate impact in his Wilson premier squash league debut on Wednesday evening. McLauchlan beat Ed Post in four games, helping Park to a surprise win against the previously unbeaten men’s open grade team, Christchurch I. The 1988 New Zealand boys’ under-19 champion recently shifted to Christchurch.

For Lancaster Park, Michael Penman scored a big win against Rod Hayes and Brett Hibbert ruined the hitherto perfect record of his opponent, Robbie Clark, in quick order. The defeat of Christchurch I has left the Blank Trophy in an interesting stage with the first of two competition rounds completed. The first four teams, headed by Christchurch 11, are within 12 points of each other. The women’s open grade competition is more clear-cut with Christchurch a runaway leader by 30 points from Lancaster Park. But when the two teams met this week, Christchurch had its toughest match yet, winning narrowly on a games countback. Trish Roughan (Lancaster Park) inflicted the first loss of the season on Agnes Huriwai, but the one game her opponent won was enough for the team victory. Points:—
