Wet affects sport

Christchurch’s present wet and cold snap has severely curtailed sporting events in the city for a second week and has led to many ground changes. With the protection of the Lancaster Park turf paramount with the first test betvzeen the All Blacks and France a fortnight away, all rugby matches at the oval over the holiday week-end have been shifted to other venues.

The annual Town-Country matches on Monday have all been moved to the Rangiora Show Grounds, the first game starting at 10.45 a.m. and the Craw Shield senior fixture at 3 p.m. As well, both TrustBank Cup senior club matches set down for Lancaster Park today have been slotted on to the park’s south

ground and the two matches planned for Denton Oval also’ have had ground changes. The revised senior draw is: Shirley v. Linwood, L. P. South, 2.45 p.m.; Old Boys v. Belfast, L. P. South, 1 p.m.; Marist v. New Brighton, Rugby Park, 2.45 p.m.; Suburbs v. Sydenham, Rugby Park, 1 p.m.; University v. Burnside, Burnside 1, 2.45 p.m.; Lincoln College v. Otautahi, Lincoln College 1, 2.45 p.m.; Christchurch v. Merivale, Nunweek, 2.45 p.m.; Albion v. Hornby, Middleton, 2.45 p.m. Junior Advisory Board rugby has been cancelled. All soccer is off, apart from two matches involving travelling teams — the Chatham Cup encounter between Christchurch United and Ros-lyn-Wakari at Rangiora

Domain at 12.30 p.m., and Rangers and Green Island in a first division match at Rangers Park at 1.45 p.m. Junior soccer has been cancelled, as well as the Town v. Country match on Monday. In common with other sports played on City Council fields, most hockey games in Christchurch this week-end have been cancelled. The only women’s matches to be played are those scheduled for the artificial surfaces. All men’s games have been called off, including the South Island boys’ under 15 tournament, which was to have been played on grass pitches. However, the men’s quadrangular tournament at Porritt Park from today until Monday will proceed.
