Union agrees to fresh election

PA Levin Six Otaki abattoir meat workers have won victory against the West Coast branch of the Meat Workers’ Union. The workers had taken the union to court over alleged discrepancies during a ballot to elect a delegate at the plant on December 12, 1988.

They claimed that non-union members had been able to vote during the ballot and that a proxy vote had been allowed from someone not entitled to vote. An out-of-court deal thrashed out last week between the lawyers of the men and the union stipulates an election for a delegate and deputy delegate be held in accordance with

the rules of the New Zealand Meat Workers Union before July 28. Those eligible to vote will have to be financial members of the union employed at the plant, and financial members dismissed from the plant before May 19, 1989 who had gone through the correct grievance procedures and had been reinstated at the plant.
